Last night fans in North America were treated to the third episode of Batwoman season 2. “Bat Girl Magic!” finally saw Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder getting her upgraded suit. But the episode also dropped a huge reference to a classic character from Tim Burton’s Batman ’89.
During the episode Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott) came in to possession of Kate’s cell phone. Having been found in the wreckage of her plane crash, Jacob spent the early minutes of the episode trying to unlock the device. Having unsuccessfully getting hold of Sophie (Meagan Tandy) – now on Coryana with Alice (Rachel Skarsten) – he turns to The Crows tech to try and break in to the phone.
When he does he scrolls through her photos and lands upon an abstract, purple painting on which Kate has noted the name Safiyah. No further context on how this relates to Kate’s investigation of Safiyah is given. But in a later conversation with Sophie, Jacob does drop a huge new piece of information.
When Sophie arrives in office to share the news that Kate might be alive, Jacob asks her. “Do you have any idea what in the hell Kate was doing, looking into a painting by Jack Napier?”
Fans of Tim Burton’s 1989 film will remember that Jack Napier was the real name of Jack Nicholson’s Joker. The alias has also been used several times in the comics as a nod to Burton’s groundbreaking film. Could using his name in the series be a precursor to Joker becoming part of the story?
In the world of Batwoman it is believed that Batman killed Joker. But perhaps that is not the case…
Developed by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries), Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder/Batwoman. The series co-stars Dougray Scott, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, Nicole Kang, Christina Wolfe and Rachel Skarsten. New episodes air Sunday’s at 8/7c on The CW.
