It’s safe to say that WandaVision has been a huge departure for both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. The series steps way beyond the boundaries of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, to-date, to create something which Neil called “entirely unique” in his review of the series premiere. In a new interview with Variety Bettany has discussed adjusting to the sitcom process.
“I loved every minute of it.” said Bettany when asked about playing Vision in a new comedy setting. “Then I went back and I watched [classic sitcoms] and Lizzy and I looked at each other and we just went, “Wow, this is gonna be a lot of work because these are song and dance guys.” I mean, they are consummate performers. It’s a different thing, the skills that they had, the physical comedy aspect of it, we’re not used that. It was a real challenge. And it was frightening at times, but ultimately incredibly rewarding to do.”
“There’s a moment in the second episode where we’re trying to sneak away and we’re literally doing sneaking-acting,” Bettany continues. “At one point, we stop and turned around at the same time. And then we heard [director] Matt Shakman say, ‘Uh, guys!’”
Just when they thought he was going to tell them to take it down a notch, Shakman said, “Can you have a double take?”
Without a doubt the new style is working for fans as WandaVision has arrived to both critical and audience acclaim. Episode 4 will debut on Disney+ this Friday, January 29.
WandaVision stars the returning Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff and Paul Bettany as Vision. Joining them are Kathryn Hahn, Kat Dennings, Randall Park and Teyonah Parris.
