Despite being slated by fans and critics, it seems as though Ready Player Two will be heading to the big screen. While on his press tour for Ready Player Two, Ernest Cline confirmed that a sequel to the 2018 film is currently in the early stages of development.
Talking to Inverse, Cline confirmed that plans are moving forward to adapt his sequel novel and that he is confident that the original team will return.
“It’s in the early stages right now, especially since Hollywood is in limbo right now. But I can tell from the experience of making the first movie that everybody had a lot of fun.”
Warner Bros has yet to comment on the status of Ready Player Two. However, since we’re talking about Cline’s own work, he would surely be one of the first to know if there were plans in motion. Considering that Tye Sheridan previously expressed his hopes to return to the OASIS and that Olivia Cooke confirmed that she’s contracted for a sequel, we think it is safe to say that a sequel is well and truly on its way.
Obviously, the first film differs significantly to the book. This raises a few questions. How will the onscreen adaptation differ to the book? It will definitely be interesting to see what they prioritize and change. Regardless, as big lovers of that world we simply cannot wait to hear more.
