Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander recently shared her excitement at hopefully beginning production on the 2018 film’s sequel in early 2021. But despite not having entered production MGM had kept the film on its release schedule for March 19, 2021.
Now, as per The Wrap, MGM has finally pulled the plug on that date. Given the cast hasn’t filmed a single frame it’s highly unlikely that director Ben Wheatley will be able to meet that deadline!
At the time of writing MGM has yet to give the film a new release date, instead opting to remove the film from its schedule. Fans need not worry however. This is simply a move to allow the studio time to properly reschedule the production for 2021. We fully expect the film to release in 2022.
Little is known about the sequel to 2018’s $275m grossing original aside from Vikander’s continued involvement. The first film ended on a cliffhanger involving the mysterious Trinity organisation which fans of the recent Tomb Raider game trilogy will know well.
