With an anticipated release in theatres on July 8, 2022 and after announcing director Nia DaCosta, rumour has it that the untitled Captain Marvel sequel will be shooting in the UK.
Murphy’s Multiverse is reporting that Marvel Studios has registered a production company in the United Kingdom and therefore the film is very likely to start production here as well as other parts of Europe.
With the coronavirus still impacting the entertainment industry and presenting a danger to cast and crew, it is unlikely that we will receive confirmation from Marvel Studios until production can safely start.
Brie Larson will reprise her role as titular Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Little else is known about the film at this stage. Earlier this year it was confirmed that Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming Candyman remake, will helm the project. It is rumoured the storyline of Captain Marvel 2 will take inspiration from the comic book storyline ‘Secret Invasion’. The script is currently being worked on by upcoming Marvel series WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell.
Next to this, the film is likely to tie in to the Secret Invasion project Marvel will stream on Disney+. Secret Invasion is a comic book published by Marvel in 2008. The storyline is based on the Skrulls, who we saw introduced into the MCU in Captain Marvel (2019). The Skrulls infiltrate superheroes in this fan-favourite comic, which revealed many well known characters, such as Elektra and Spider-Woman, to be Skrulls in disguise. This could mean that we will see characters from previous Marvel films revealed to be Skrulls.
The Ms. Marvel television series is currently in pre-production also to be released on Disney+ and is rumoured to involve directors of Captain Marvel (2019), Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Rumour has it Brie Larson is also set to appear in the Ms. Marvel series as well as Ms. Marvel making an appearance in Captain Marvel 2, creating a companion piece story between the two.
