The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has long reigned on TV and in comics. But the silver screen, where movies in the early 90’s found success has been more illusive.
A CGI movie released in 2007, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chris Evans and Patrick Stewart, grossed $95.6M but failed to ignite a sequel. Two live-action/CGI hybrid movies released in 2014 and 2016 grossed over $700M between them but also fell short of critical acclaim.
But now, according to Deadline, Paramount Pictures is heading back to the realm of animation for its next big screen Turtles adventure. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver will produce the reboot through their company, Point Grey Pictures.
Rogen’s Neighbours: Sorority Rising partner Brendan O’Brian has been brought on board to pen the script with Gravity Falls Jeff Rowe set to direct.
“Adding Seth, Evan and James’ genius to the humor and action that’s already an integral part of TMNT is going to make this a next-level reinvention of the property,” said ViacomCBS’ Brian Robbins. “I’m looking forward to see what they do, and I know that Ramsey Naito and her team are excited to take the Nick Animation Studio into another great direction with their first-ever CG-animated theatrical.”
