Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has held on to the top spot at the North America for a second weekend. Taking an estimated $72m, the Disney/Lucasfilm release fell by approximately -59% from it’s huge $177m opening weekend.
Despite a stellar Christmas Day performance of $32.1m the film has begun to slow down in the post-holiday slump. Performance year-on-year in North America was down by just under -5% on 2018.
The film’s domestic gross now sits at around $361m and will easily cross $400m this week. By comparison Skywalker is outpacing the previous entry in the franchise, The Last Jedi, which fell -67.5% in its second weekend.
Internationally, Skywalker, continues to perform well, raking in an estimated $94.3m over the weekend for a $363m international total. It’s worth noting that many major territories celebrated Christmas this week with cinemas closed on 25th, unlike North America.
Globally the final film in the so-called Skywalker Saga now sits at $725m and should clear $1b in the next week or so.
