There were plenty of new films which made their debut at the worldwide box office this weekend. Whilst Joker and Maleficent were battling it out for the top spot another film was making a serious dent in the box office in third place.
Sony Pictures Zombieland: Double Tap (reviewed here) opened with an impressive $26.7m across the three-day weekend. That’s notably higher than the $24m it’s predecessor made back in 2009, an unprecedented success in this day-and-age.
According to BoxOfficeMojo the sequel received a “B+” CinemaScore from opening day audiences and played to a crowd that was 57% male and 56% of the overall audience was aged 25+.
Internationally, Double Tap is now playing in 17 international territories and grossed $5m this weekend for a cume that currently stands at $5.3m. The UK led all markets with a $1.7m followed by Australia with $1.3m. Looking ahead, the film will open in Russia, Brazil and Mexico next weekend followed by openings in France (Oct 30), Germany (Nov 7), South Korea (Nov 13), Italy (Nov 14) and Japan (Nov 22).
Directed by Ruben Fleischer, Zombieland: Double Tap stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin, Rosario Dawson and Zoey Deutch.
