Last night whilst we were all at a screening of the upcoming movie The Informer some serious new broke courtesy of Deadline.
The trade broke the news that Sony Pictures and Disney/Marvel Studios were able to come to a deal to continue Spider-Man’s involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to the report Sony Pictures had offered to continue the current financing deal which has seen Spidey joining the rest of the Avengers on screen. Disney, however, had other things in mind and asked for a 50/50 cut of all profits.
Negotiations were no-doubt complicated by the $1B+ success of Spider-Man: Far From Home over the summer.
Whilst Variety looked to debunk the rumour it was then cooperated by The Hollywood Reporter.
Sony Pictures has no provided a brief comment to the press confirming that Kevin Feige will no longer be involved with the Spider-Man franchise moving forwards.
“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise,” said a Sony spokesperson. “We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”
“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
It is said that Sony is still working on two further movies to be directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland. But could the franchise continue if it lost its connections to the MCU?
