Dark Phoenix kicked off its North American run with previews on Thursday night. The news is now rolling in that the 20th Century Fox release made around $5m.
That figure puts it behind the $8.2m which previous movie, X-Men: Apocalypse, made in previews back in 2016.
According to BoxOfficeMojo that puts the movie squarely in line with War of the Planet of the Apes which went on to gross $56m in its opening weekend. But industry experts believe that Dark Phoenix could fall lower than even $40m making it the worst opening in X-Men franchise history.

Dark Phoenix is being directed by Simon Kinberg. James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender are confirmed to return to the roles of Charles Xavier, Mystique and Magneto respectively. Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp and Kodi Smit-McPhee will also return.
The film is due for release on June 7, 2019 in North America. In the UK the movie drops on June 5.
