Synopsis
A distant conflict sends the team on an away mission while the Happy Harbor gang decide what to do with Brion Markov and Halo.
Review
Up to this stage Young Justice: Outsiders has remained very much on Earth. Aside from the previous episode it has also very much happened at night. This is now the second episode in a row to inject some more colour to the series as it takes place both during the day on Earth and on the colourful planet of New Genesis.
“Away Mission” is a deep dive into Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. There’s a lot of info to take in regarding the New Gods and the Bugs who inhabit New Genesis. The episode is rather unforgiving for the uninitiated, blasting information and giving very little time for it to settle in. It’s a perfect slice of DC Comics deep dive action for fans in the know but I struggled to keep up a little bit.
The characters of New Genesis are all very intriguing. It would have been good to spend a little more time with the Bugs. Had we been able to see more of their hive lifestyle it would have increased the impact of Forager’s expulsion at the end of the episode.
The introduction of M’Gann’s brother M’kann made for a great twist to the episode. It will be interesting to see how he may factor in to future episodes in the season or if this was simply the opportunity to create some tension. M’Gann has been criminally underused so far this season. This episode finally gives her a chance to take the lead.
We know from the opening credits we’re building towards an appearance by Apokolips. This episode takes us a step towards it but I do feel that my overall takeaway from the episode is that I’ve been chastised for no knowing enough about the fourth world.
Back on Earth we get some amusing scenes with Halo and Brion. Seeing the two beginning to practice their newfound powers brings fourth some funny moments. It also continues Conner’s opportunity to be the father figure to the newbie characters.
After last weeks side mission with Dick and the Roy’s the humour is a little more low key. But it’s still great to see the series flexing its comedy muscles rather than focussing on the heavy hitting storylines of the first three episodes.
It’s a solid watch but not the best episode of the season so far.
Verdict
“Away Mission” brings Forager in to the mix and finally begins to round out the Outsiders team. It breaks from the metahuman trafficking story for a moment to instead refocus the story on some of its characters.
