The will-he-won’t-he story of Jerome Valeska on Gotham has been enthralling fans for nearly three season. The character seemed the perfect precursor to The Joker but then he became something more. As his legend spread across the city it seemed Jerome might just be the Clown Prince of Crime himself.
Going in to the current season it seemed all but confirmed. Jerome IS The Joker. After slicing off his own face and stitching it back on how could he not be? Well now it seems series star David Mazouz has confirmed that Jerome IS NOT The Joker.
Speaking to DiscussingFilm, Mazouz revealed that the real Joker will indeed appear later in the series.
“[Jerome] is not the Joker, that’s all I’ll say. He’s definitely the inspiration for the Joker and the way that the Joker comes into the show, for me, is one of the most brilliant things Gotham has ever done,”
Cameron Monaghan who portrays Jerome also chimed in on the subject via a now deleted tweet which read:
“I can confirm. What we’ve cooked up and discussed is something not to be missed. It’s a twist on familiar themes, both new and old echoes of the mythos. Something entirely new, but we believe true to the spirit of the show as well as the comics. Proud I got to be a part of it.”
When will this real Joker show up? Who knows! But with Gotham very much performing as a bubble show it better be sooner rather than later.
Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as James Gordon, Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock and David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne. The series also stars Robin Lord Taylor as Penguin, Erin Richards as Barbara Kean and Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth.
