In the fourteen days since its release ‘Power Rangers’ has had a slightly bumpy ride. Opening to a moderately successful domestic opening weekend of $40.3M the film fell 64.8% to $14.2M in its second weekend. The film has also received a lukewarm reception from the international box office where it opened with $18.6M from 62 markets.
In its second offshore frame ‘Power Rangers’ was able to add another $8.1M to that total. It has now expanded to over 70 territories with crucial Asian markets still to open throughout the next two months.
Crunching the numbers at BoxOfficeMojo.com ‘Power Rangers’ crossed the $100M worldwide on Tuesday. Monday to Wednesday of this week the film has made a further $3.2M taking its domestic total to $68M.
International grosses are reported weekly. Thus the current worldwide gross is a calculation of the up-to-date domestic numbers and international numbers through week two.
Currently that worldwide gross is $101M. This number will increase somewhat on Sunday when the international weekly numbers are out.
It may not yet be enough to secure a sequel but ‘Power Rangers’ is certainly not a financial failure. We’re off to see the film again tomorrow in fact!
