Variety is reporting ‘Batgirl’ is coming to the big screen in a solo outing and she’s bringing Joss Whedon with her. In an exclusive story the outlet is reporting that Whedon, famed for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and both ‘Avengers’ movies for Marvel, is in final talks to write, direct and produce the film. No other producers are currently attached to the as-yet-untitled film.
Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, is overseeing with Jon Berg and DC Comics own Geoff Johns.
Whedon, DC and Warner are yet to comment or confirm the news.
Should the film make it to the big screen this will be the second time Batgirl has found herself in a film. She was last on the silver screen in Joel Schumacher’s ‘Batman & Robin’ played by Alicia Silverstone. The character has also appeared in various animated incarnations and was played by Dina Meyer in the short lived live-action TV series ‘Birds of Prey’.
Warner Bros. continue to develop a sequel to 2016’s ‘Suicide Squad’, a Harley Quinn centric spin-off under the ‘Gotham City Sirens’ banner as well as films based on ‘Aquaman’, ‘The Flash,’, ‘Nightwing’ and ‘Batman’.
