BEWARE OF SPOILERS
Some of the more creative issues in the ‘Villains Month’ – at least of the issues I’m reading – have been saved for the various Bat-titles, in particular ‘Detective Comics’ and ‘Batman & Robin’.
This issue is a nice update of the Harley Quinn origin story that fleshes out some of the smaller details and brings us up-to-date with her involvement with the Suicide Squad.
Even though Harley was an invention of ‘Batman: The Animated Series’ you would be hard pressed to find any fan out there who isn’t aware of her backstory but perhaps some of the finer details such as her first work placement in hospital before moving to Arkham Asylum and I think this is possibly the first mention that she pretended to be a patient to mix with the criminals before becoming one herself.
I’m told this issue is essentially a retelling of the origin in ‘Suicide Squad’ with a few minor tweaks which is a shame because to retread over the origin only 18 months later is a bit of a wasted opportunity.
This would have been a great opportunity to tell a new Harley one-shot but with her own series coming I guess DC saw this as an opportunity to try and introduce more readers to her world.
What I do really like about this issue is Googe’s artwork. The cartoonish nature fits well with Harley’s personality but also her cartoon roots. The artwork is fun throughout without being too confusing. This is the first time I’ve seen his artwork but I’ll definitely be looking out for other series he works on in future.
Overall a fairly generic comic but with really cool art.
