Transformers #2 is written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson. Colours are by Mike Spicer and letters by Rus Wooton. The book is published by Image Comics.

Transformers #2 is available now, in print and on digital platforms where all good comic books are sold.

    Synopsis

THE SMASH-HIT SERIES CONTINUES!   The Decepticons have been unleashed! As Optimus Prime and Autobots regroup, Starscream terrorizes humanity. This issue features a surprising first Energon Universe appearance!

    Review

Another news series debuting its second issue today is Transformers. Last month I gave issue #1 a full five stars which can be a difficult act to follow. But I’m really happy to say that Daniel Warren Johnson’s series is continuing to fire on all cylinders and adding a rich level of extra texture to the long-running franchise.

Issue #2 picks up moments after the end of last month’s debut. Optimus Prime, having suffered a huge loss, is exploring the Earth’s landscape for the first time. It’s an incredible and unexpected moment for a number of reasons. The parallels are a stark warning about the fragility of life and the world around us. But also act as the perfect introduction to Optimus’ delicate and caring nature. What’s striking is how Johnson has captured the character’s voice. I wasn’t conscious of this during issue #1, but reading issue #2 I could hear Peter Cullen’s voice in my head. A strong sign that Johnson has truly tapped in to the core of Transformers storytelling.

Through his instant connection with Spike we learned about their shared histories. It gives Johnson a chance to quickly catch up any new readers on the history of the Cybertron war. It also allows for some further context to Spike’s difficult family background glimpsed last month. Again it’s this kind of richness in storytelling which is really making Transformers a must-read right out of the gate.

Of course there is plenty more going on. I commented last month on how Megatron continues to be a looming threat rather than an immediate presence. That continues this month in the best way possible. It’s really starting to feel like when he makes a full appearance it’s going to be devastating. The Decepticons on Earth have been ruthless enough. Exceptional work from Johnson to hype the villain up as much as he has already.

There’s an equal measure to the development of both sets of characters. Whilst the Autobots gentle nature shines through, so does the barbarity of the Decepticons. Ironic since really they’re both after the same goal. Energy. But Johnson does a great job of tying everything together via both Spike and Carly. A tense cliffhanger to this issue also plays in to more of the thematic elements of the story.

    Verdict

A brilliant second issue both furthering and complicating Daniel Warren Johnson’s story. The added context and depth is a welcome addition to the franchise. A must-read for Transformers fans.
