Interesting news from the DCEU camp this morning. No we don’t mean those Wonder Woman reviews. Producer Charles Roven (The Dark Knight Trilogy, Justice League) has been discussing the setting for 2018’s Aquaman.
“Aquaman will make reference [to Justice League]. There will be some reference of something that preceded Aquaman that will be in Aquaman. I believe that is the intention,” said Roven in an interview with CinemaBlend. “James [Wan] definitely knows where he’s going with [Aquaman], and that movie takes place in a world where Justice League happened, and Man of Steel happened, and Wonder Woman obviously takes place before Man of Steel — except for the bookends we have. So that’s where we have the most ability to freeform. We could do a movie that takes place after Justice League, we can do a movie that takes place after Batman v Superman… well not really. You can’t do a movie in between Batman v Superman and Justice League, but we can do movies that take place after Justice League and we can do movies that precede Justice League.”
Roven has seen his role in the DCEU change in recent months as Warner Bros. set about shaking up its creative team. He is no longer producing several of the solo films – Aquaman included – and will instead take a back seat. He will now serve as more of an Executive Producer and only in the areas of the franchise he was initially involved with i.e. Justice League and Man of Steel. He is still arguably one of the most in-the-know members of the DCEU team however.
Jason Momoa stars in the title role, returning to the character he plays in this fall’s Justice League. The film also stars Amber Heard as Mera; Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe as Vulko; Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry; Dolph Lundgren as Nereus; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta; with Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master; and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.
The film is being produced by Peter Safran, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Rob Cowan, Jon Berg and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers.
The film hits cinemas December 21, 2018.
