Othercide is developed by Lightbulb Crew and published by Focus Entertainment. The game is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Reviewed on PS5 via backwards compatibility.

    Synopsis

Descend into Humanity’s last hope. The Daughters, echoes of the greatest warrior to ever live, are all who stand before Suffering and death. Lead your army of Daughters to battle. Your prowess in combat will shape their abilities and personality. Make the toughest decision and sacrifice one to heal another – survivors will get stronger, ready to fight the next battle.

Combat is an intricate dance of spectacular actions and counters: plan ahead of time and set up impressive chains of abilities to outsmart the enemy. Fight in epic boss battles against the sources of Suffering – dread creatures pulled from the worst of Humanity’s crimes against itself. You will fight. You will fail. You will rise again.

    Review

Slashers tend to be one of my favourite game genres and when a game comes along that mixes that with another genre I like, strategy, it definitely is a game I need to take a look at.

Othercide is a bit different to most of the turn based strategy games I’ve played previously in terms of the bulk of the story, the gameplay mechanics are still heavily set in strategy mode but felt it offered more than I’d normally get from a strategy game.

I would say the game isn’t the easiest to get into in terms of controls and what things do I would say it’s probably a game for the more experienced strategy gamer or a game you’d probably need to keep trying at if you’re not particularly experienced in this genre, having said that the rewards are definitely there of you are willing to invest time into it as the game itself is stunning visually with a dark story running alongside.

At the beginning of the game we are introduced to the main character simply called The Red Mother, a shady character in charge of the dark realm within the realm you are able to summon neings called the Daughters all with their unique skill sets and fighting styles, which you can also fully customise the look of too. There is no rengeration of health here, to help or heal one daughter you must sacrifice another so important choices must be made and they’re not easy ones to make either.

Othercide is relatively unique in it’s approach to the combat with gameplay as it doesn’t feel or certainly look like combat does in normal turn based games, this is where the slasher part comes into play as when you have selected your attacking move you can watch your chosen daughter take down the enemy with a ferocious attack using over the top weapons followed by pools of blood.

The game is single player and doesn’t have a multiplayer option and to be fair I think in this case the developer has definitely made the correct choice as they have been able to focus on bringing an immersive and enjoyable experience which I really enjoyed playing and will continue to do so.

Graphically Othercide is stunning, a very similar style to the film Sin City using only blacks, whites and reds giving the whole look of the game a dramatic and at times horrific effect which really works well to make the game feel more immersive in a unique way.

    Verdict

Fully immersive gameplay and stunning graphics make Othercide a stand out game.

The game is difficult to get into but it’s definitely worth persevering as the rewards are there for all to enjoy.
