Scarlett VS #1 is written and created by Gareth Buchan, illustrated by Juan Molinares, coloured by Andres Ramirez and lettered by Ken Reynolds. Issue #1 is available now available from Drive Thru Comics.

    Synopsis

With a mix of mythology, action, adventure, humour, and a host of colourful villains, Scarlett Vs. centres around the tale of our hero Scarlett who lives in a church with her only companion, Mr. Ted.

Raised in secret to protect the powerful emerald of Lucifer from those who wish to wield its power, she must come to terms with her new task and search for her true origins…

In issue #1 Scarlett awakens to find a wondrous surprise but as she sets out on her “greatest adventure yet” she begins to realise that all is not as it seems… and that her destiny cannot be escaped.

    Review

When something different comes along I’m always intrigued to take a look, having already previewed Scarlett VS I was definitely interested to look at the full book.

What seems to me to be a mix of Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory but put together with plenty of attitude, Scarlett as a character is a strong heroine, a hero of the modern age, someone that definitely doesn’t take any messing about from anyone, but also someone that lives a bit of a scatty life which definitely makes her more relatable to the reader.

The story starts off quite fun and colourful but towards the end the colour goes and it all gets a bit darker which is intriguing to see where the creative team will take the arc.

Gareth Buchan has set the scene with thisbfirst issue with a strong potential of ongoing story arcs across many characters, this first issue gives us the backround to the new hero of the story Scarlett, albeit an unlikely one. I did get a kind of Tim Burton vibe from the story with it having a few trippy characters involved, I especially liked Pumkinface an definitelywould like to see more of him, which definitely added more depth to the story rather than it being one we have heard countless times before, although there are some similar aspects of the story to other stories out there the story still feels unique and fresh and makes you feel as though you are about to step into a while new world and hopefully a longer adventure.

The creative team behind this have done an amazing job with the project, the illustrations from Juan Molinares are top quality bringing an unique story to life with bold and striking art that captures the readers imagination, partner that up with the colours from Andres Ramirez and the rest of the creative team and what you are left with is a bright and bold creation that oozes character with plenty of potential for more.

    Verdict

I enjoyed the first part of this story and looking forward to see where the story pans put from here, a unique take on a hero story with big potential to grow the universe, I’m looking forward to see the story unfold and will be taking a look at the origin stories too.
