Batgirl #35 is available now where all good comics are sold!
Synopsis
After Batgirl’s discovery of the Terrible Trio’s bid to control the Gotham underworld, she’s immediately off to investigate—starting with the group’s muscle…the Shark! Can Babs use her wits to survive a showdown with this bro turned bruiser? Or is he just a warm-up for the battle to come against this band of wild criminals?
Review
I’m a huge fan of the Batgirl character but I have to admit that she continues to be lost in this current era of DC Comics. Though she had a place in the Heroes In Crisis it seems outside of team-up books she’s lacking in purpose.
That being said “Terrible” part 2, as it is presented here, is a stronger story than we saw in the previous issue. With Barbara tied up in the Terrible Trio’s layer and looking likely to drown we’re able to explore more of her skillset outside of a computer than we’ve seen for a while.
The problem the Batgirl book is currently facing is a series of uninspiring villains. We know very little about this Terrible Trio (are they masks!?). It feels like a villain of the week type story and Batgirl is better than that.
This issue succeeds in telling a bigger story than just Barbara’s escape. Alysia’s meeting with the investors vying for control of Gordon Clean Energy is far more interesting that the Terrible Trio.
There’s a coup going on in Batgirl and it could be one which threatens her biggest secret. There’s a lot of postulating going on in this issue as the pairing of Ms Rochester and Mr Welmington manipulate Alysia and back her in to a corner.
At this stage I can only presume there may be a connection between the Trio and these investors unless this side story carries through in to the next arc. Either way it’s far more interesting than almost everything else going on here.
On the upside the artwork by Paul Pelletier, Norm Rapmund and Jose Marzan Jr. makes for some fun reading.
Verdict
“Terrible” part 2 is a strong followup to the first part of this story. It’s focus on various aspects of Barbara’s life aid in bringing the character some much needed concept.
But I still want to know if those are masks or real animal heads!
