Review
The first arc of Chip Zdarsky’s Daredevil has been revelatory for me. It has been incredibly enjoyable seeing the character reintroduced to a New York landscape he no longer understands and how this has de-constructed him.
The conclusion of the previous issue (reviewed here) left us all completely hanging. Daredevil, now sporting a Punisher t-shirt, wielding guns and severely injured.
The story of “Know Fear” part five is really quite inevitable. Having broken the character down both Murdock and Zdarsky are now backed in to a corner.
Through the course of the issue Matt, through conversation with the rest of The Defenders, that he isn’t alone in his complex feelings towards his heroism. He’s been running around feeling like he’s the only person who has ever killed in the line of duty and failing to acknowledge that many, if not all, of his colleagues have been exactly where he is.
This is a defining moment for the character. One could argue his reaction to this epiphany is a little outside the box, rather than taking comfort that Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Danny Randy have all killed in the line of duty he refers to them all collectively as murderers.
Follow that up with an appearance by Spider-Man and we have the makings of a character who is broken.
Finally alone in his apartment Matt chooses to cast out the devil. A religious metaphor tied to his heritage but also symbolic for where the story goes from here.
Once again Matt Murdock is done with being Daredevil. But the question remains as to where he will go from here?
Once again Zdarsky’s zippy writing and equally zippy artwork are perfect for the story. This series as a whole has been a thoroughly engaging.
I enjoy many series for strong writing or strong visuals. Finding a striking combination of both is like bottling Lightning but that’s what Marvel has been able to do here.
Verdict
The night is darkest just before the dawn as they say. For Daredevil that is extremely accurate right now. Even with a guest appearances by The Defenders and Spider-Man aren’t enough.
The emotional rollercoaster that is Daredevil continues in what is another absolutely fantastic issue.
