Daredevil #4 is available now where all good comics are sold!

    Synopsis

KNOW FEAR. (genuine synopsis from Comixology!)

    Review

Well just when I thought I had this series pegged Marvel goes and releases an issue like this. After taking a beating at the hands of Detective North, Daredevil was rescued by a flurry of bullets from Frank Castle and whisked away.

Now we catch up with the pair as they have a heart-to-heart whilst Castle nurses Matt Murdock’s wounds. It pauses the action of the series but actually offers a moment of reflect and a acts as a – very short – breather for the audience.

I’ve discussed in previous reviews of the series that it feels like Matt is very much a fish out of water right now. His lack of understanding having returned to New York has been staggering. He’s underestimated the NYPD, especially Cole North who is every bit the hero of his own story, and he’s also taken his eye off the ball with Wilson Fisk.

All this has led to where we find him in this issue: shot, bruised and completely down on his luck.

It’s become very clear that Zdarsky is painting us a picture of Daredevil at his absolute lowest. He has no place in the world, no place as a hero and no allies aside from Frank Castle. A man with whom he is normally the moral antithesis.

By the close of this issue Matt has wielded guns and crossed just about every line he can possibly cross. Part of me wants to shake Zdarsky for taking the character to such a low place in his life. The rest of me is seriously excited to see what happens when he is on the up again after this… if he ever claws back from it that is.

I’m impressed that the series has gone to the depths that it has to break down the character rather than bringing him back the hero. It’s certainly one of the most interesting incarnations of the character that I’ve read in some years.

    Long may it last!

    Verdict

Things definitely take a turn for the crazy in paring up the Man Without Fear and The Punisher. We’re exploring the character at what could be his lowest moment but his low is a new high for readers.

    7/10

Daredevil #4 is written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Marco Checchetto and a cover by Julian Totino Tedesco.
