    Review

Pamela Isley’s journey continues as the hit DC comic book series by G. Willow Wilson, with art by Marcio Takara and covers by Jessica Fong. Poison Ivy #25 unfurls as an oversized anthology, weaving together captivating tales from Ivy’s past, present, and future, and is set to bloom on shelves on September 4.

Poison Ivy is one of DC Comics’ most beloved and well-conceptualised characters, especially within the LGBTQIA+ community. In both live-action and animated portrayals, stories featuring Poison Ivy strike a perfect balance between action-packed and fun while also exploring relevant themes such as environmentalism and queerness. Ivy has been captivating readers for a long time, and “Poison Ivy #25” is a prime example of that, brilliantly embodying all these qualities.

The narrative springs to life in the murky depths of Slaughter Swamp, where Ivy, amidst the serenity of her morning coffee, playfully rouses a drowsy Killer Croc alongside Harley and Janet. The tranquillity is short-lived, however, as Ivy enlists her companions in a mission to rejuvenate the greenery surrounding the swamp, battered from a recent clash against Woodrue and an infestation of mushroom zombies. This issue takes readers on a rollercoaster through time, delving into Ivy’s life with mini-stories that piece together like a vibrant, verdant puzzle. Among the varied tales, one particularly mesmerising subplot follows a pair of adventurers as they experiment with mushrooms in the forest, leading to chaotic and unexpected turns.

The comic doesn’t shy away from showcasing Ivy’s complex relationships, including intriguing encounters with the notorious Bat-themed vigilante, hinting at their intertwined fates. What truly sets this issue apart is the exceptional artistry on display. An early illusion sequence involving Batman and Ivy is a testament to the creative team’s unparalleled skill. Thanks to its swirling colours and beautiful drawings of Ivy’s powers at work, it captures the beautiful chaos of the illusion.

    Verdict

‘Poison Ivy #25’ is a kaleidoscopic journey through the life of one of Gotham’s most enigmatic figures. It promises readers an experience as rich and unpredictable as the character it celebrates. It’s an excellent read for fans of the characters and world and for those who love a good surprise.
