“LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE” part 6! You’ve seen glimpses of him. You’ve witnessed the carnage he’s unleashed on Central City. Now meet Godspeed, the super-speed serial killer who murders speedsters and steals their powers. Barry Allen is going to need help!

It was about time for ‘The Flash’ to take a big leap in its storytelling. After five very solid issues which has toed the line between human drama and superhero action something needed to happen to kick the series in to overdrive. This is does just that.

Having lost new love interest Meena to Godspeed in the previous issue (reviewed here), her fate still unconfirmed, Barry was bound to be on edge here. We’re now seeing the convergence of the human and hero aspects of ‘The Flash’ and it’s written perfectly by Williamson. This being ‘The Flash’ everybody around Barry is also destined to be pulled in to the action particularly the much maligned Wally West. Williams has cleverly laid out a story over the previous five issues which has felt like several plots all taking place at the same time, what happens in this issue is those various threads are brought together. It’s all done to feel incredibly organic to the story and never once feels contrived.

This issue also plays as a story of tragedy. For those who have been carefully reading ‘The Flash’ there have been the seeds of what is to be revealed in this issue. The relationship between Barry and sidekick August Heart has taken a bit of a backseat in the previous couple of issues but its back at the fore here. The reveal of Godspeed’s true identity is a truly heartbreaking moment for Barry.

This issue shows Williamson’s writing at its best. There’s a huge amount at stake for Barry and its conveyed perfectly throughout the issues narrative. I’m excited to see where the story goes next.

Continuing the run of amazing artwork both Carmine Di Giandomenico and Ivan Plascencia again pull their A-game out of the bag. The classic look of the previous issue has been jettisoned for the much more striking look of the series opening issues. Barry has developed some stubble whilst fixated on finding Meena and his expressions are much more forlorn.

It read great. It looks great. It IS great.

    Verdict

‘The Flash’ #6 is possibly the best issue of this run of ‘The Flash’ to date. A huge twist in an already complex story which is sure carry the creativity of the series through the next few issues. An absolute must read for any Flash fan!
