In the last few months there has been very little news on director Josh Boone’s New Mutants. Initially due for release in 2018 the movie was bumped to August 2019 to allow for further production to take place.
Now a new rumour from journalist Scott Bechtel on Twitter suggests there may be much more turmoil behind-the-scenes than has been previously reported.
According to Bechtel’s Merc with a Podcast series Boone’s relationship with Fox is crumbling as the two refuse to compromise on the tone of the movie. Boone, pushing for the more horror orientated aesthetic of the first teaser, is refusing to soften the tone of the movie to bring it in line with other X franchise movies.
It is now said the movie could be delayed again whilst the two parties work to find a compromise. Alternatively a release on streaming platform Hulu has also been mooted.

New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt, Henry Zaga, and Alice Braga. The film is directed by Josh Boone from a screenplay by Boone and Knate Lee. Production credits go to Simon Kinberg, Lauren Schuler Donner and Karen Rosenfelt.
New Mutants now hits cinemas February 22, 2019.
