There’s no current timeline for the release of DC Films long gestating Black Adam movie starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. But that hasn’t stopped producer Hiram Garcia from giving an update to the press.
In an interview with Collider Garcia touched on the current status of the films development.
“Black Adam is definitely happening. We’re actually very deep into a script on it right now, which is coming along really well. I’m really excited with the story we’ve crafted. Look, I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. I’ve always had this dream, I’ve always wanted to—You know, you kind of have like these goals of like, ‘One day I’d love to be able to do this and this,’ and making a superhero movie was definitely always one of my dreams. For the longest time, you know you kind of have this living superhero in Dwayne Johnson, so I was always trying to figure out what’s the perfect character that will kind of fit him and his look and his build and his kind of edge and the attitude he’s got.”
It’s no secret that Black Adam and Shazam were originally set to co-star in the same movie. So why does the character not appearing 2019’s Shazam! alongside Zach Levi?
“So as we were developing an actual Black Adam and Shazam! movie, we were just realizing that both characters are so special that we didn’t want to compromise either of them by cramming them both into the same movie, so that’s why we made the decision to let Shazam have his own standalone movie and kind of launch him properly, and then we’ll do the same for Black Adam. And so that kind of really freed things up. It allowed us to develop the right version of both.”
It sounds like a sensible decision to us! Are you looking forward to this film finally going in to production?
With the news that Zachary Levi will take the lead in Shazam it was time for some news on Black Adam. The film has been gestating for a while now with The Rock set to star. The film pre-dates Shazam in terms of production but has been on the back burner to give filmmakers a chance to introduce the Captain Marvel character first.
The Tracking Board is running a story today that Undateable creator Adam Sztykiel is in talks to write the film. At the time of press there were no names in the frame for directing the film.
It is also worth noting that Black Adam is housed at New Line Pictures, an off-shoot of Warner Bros. Studios. The film may well sit outside the Justice League universe of films. It will perhaps find a home in the side universealong with the new Joker film!
