Interesting developments on DC Studios’ rumoured Deathstroke and Bane film overnight from Deadline. The trade is reporting that Superbad director Greg Mottola is high in the mix to helm the as-yet-untitled project.
Mottola is no stranger to the DC Universe having previously helmed two episodes of James Gunn’s Peacemaker series in season 2. He is also executive producer and director on new Peacock series The Miniature Wife starring Elizabeth Banks and Matthew Macfadyen. He’s directed such comedy movies as Adventureland and The Daytrippers.
Rumours of a project featuring the two Batman villains first began to circulate in September 2024. Insider believe that an initial screenplay was penned by Matthew Orton, who wrote for the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series Moon Knight. The project has yet to be officially announced by the studio.
Should the film go into production it would be the first live-action appearance for Bane following Tom Hardy’s portrayal in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. The character was created by Chuck Dixon, Doug Moench and Graham Nolan and first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (January 1993). The character was also famously played by wrestler Robert Swenson in 1997’s Batman & Robin.
As for Deathstroke, he was last seen on the big screen briefly played by Joe Manganiello in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the director’s own version of Justice League. On the small screen, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning actor Esai Morales across multiple episodes of HBO Max’s Titans.
