Review
We pick up with Ivy and Janet exactly where we left them — stuck in this strange little limbo of not being happy with each other, but still tied together because Ivy’s trying to cure her. Janet looks absolutely haggard now, and the art really sells how ill she is. Plus, the cover art from Jessica Fong, as always, slaps. It’s incredibly detailed, which adds to the richness of this comic – and honestly, is what makes it pop.
The writing in the first few panels is so beautiful. Wilson digs into how, in nature, nobody ever truly wins — there’s always push and pull, attack and retreat, and someone ultimately loses. It’s such a brilliant way to frame where this series has been lately. No big “slam dunk, well done team” energy — just messy balance and consequences. Another line really leapt off the page for me: “Nature doesn’t create a problem without leaving the ingredients for a solution somewhere nearby.” It’s poetic, and it resonated a lot.
This issue has it’s moments. One in partiuclar: Ivy, in true Ivy fashion, decides to get her Mary Berry on and whip up a “nice” meal for her… and I’m using air quotes heavily there, because nice is definitely up for debate. It’s meant in earnest, but it plays comedically, given the context, which makes it so entertaining.
Now, this run has been extremely slow in the story department recently — no denying that. But we actually get some payoff here, and it’s nice to feel the plot moving again. And honestly, the moment a certain amulet-swinging character makes their entrance? That perked me right up. Exactly the kind of shake-up the run needed. Plus, this jolt in energy is largely thanks to the note the issue ends of – I’m 100% back in, let’s see if they can pull it off…
Verdict
Overall, Poison Ivy #39 finally returns to being properly entertaining again. We get some much-needed payoff for both the characters (and for us, the readers), and the final page is juicy enough that it just might make up for the lull we’ve been in.
