Get ready for some seriously out of this world streaming on ARROW this November – with six fantastic, action-packed, weird and wonderful films from the Shaw Brothers studio, including a rare Hong Kong sci-fi extravaganza; a definitive and definitely steamy documentary on straight-to-video erotic thrillers, an in depth look at the wildly popular Child’s Playfranchise, and a curated selection by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe.
Brace yourselves this November for more movie madness from Hong Kong’s mightiest film studio Shaw Brothers on ARROW. As special effects-driven horror and sci-fi cinema dominated the global box office in the 1970s, Shaw Brothers not only followed suit but took things one step beyond! ARROW are streaming some of the wildest and weirdest films the company ever made – Super Inframan – one of Shaws’ most beloved cult classics, that none other than Roger Ebert called “a classy, slick production by the Hong Kong kung fu kings”, starring Danny Lee (The Killer) as the titular high-kicking superhero, defending the planet against a demon queen and her legion of subterranean mutant minions; Battle Wizard – Danny Lee again as the prince granted magical powers in Pao Hsueh-li’s fantastical wuxia; the incredible fight fantasy Demon of the Lute; Portrait in Crystal – a deliriously imaginative tale of a murderous swordswoman brought to life through a crystal sculpture, directed by Super Inframan director Hua Shan; and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, an extremely rare example of science fiction Hong Kong-style, and it is unlike any sci-fi flick you’ve ever seen before. Gorgeously restored in all their gory glory with an amazing array of never-seen-before bonus features, this is streaming heaven for fans off the offbeat, extreme and irrepressibly entertaining. All these films (and more) have been newly remastered by ARROW for their upcoming SHAWSCOPE VOLUME 4 Blu-ray box set, available from 8th December and packed with exclusive extras.
Also in November, We Kill for Love, an unmissable documentary charting the irresistible rise of the direct-to-video erotic thriller, the steamy American film genre that once dominated late night cable television and the shelves of neighborhood video stores. Director Anthony Penta delves deep into the heart and soul of a forgotten and often maligned film movement, with contributions from the likes of actors Andrew Stevens (erotic thriller mainstay and star/writer/producer of Night Eyes, featured in the film), Monique Parent (Dark Secrets) and Amy Lindsay (Forbidden Sins). Nominated for a 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Best Documentary, the film is described by Eye For Film as “thoughtful and insightful”, while Dread Central says it “as fascinating as it is informative”.
Then there’s Living With Chucky, a fascinating look at the groundbreaking Child’s Play franchise from the perspective of Kyra Elise Gardner, a filmmaker who grew up within it – she is the daughter of Chucky puppeteer Tony Gardner. Among those appearing are actors Brad Dourif (the voice of Chucky), Finoa Dourif (Chucky), Jennifer Tilly (Bride of Chucky), and franchise creator Don Mancini, as well as cult film legend John Waters, who appears in Seed of Chucky and the ChuckyTV series. Collider calls the film “a thoughtful study of how filmmaking, especially independent filmmaking, brings people together”.
