The final season of My Hero Academia streams new episodes in the UK every Saturday on Crunchyroll.
Synopsis
Izuku has dreamt of being a hero all his life—a lofty goal for anyone, but especially challenging for a kid with no superpowers. That’s right, in a world where eighty percent of the population has some kind of super-powered “quirk,” Izuku was unlucky enough to be born completely normal. But that’s not enough to stop him from enrolling in one of the world’s most prestigious hero academies.
Review
The final battle continues for the fate of Japan and the world in the My Hero Academia final season!
Episode 3 keeps the momentum going. After we witness Stain fall to All For One, the American pilots from Stars and Stripe’s squad fall, and All Might literally about to be ripped in half by the sadistic and monstrous All For One. Everything seems lost as people across the world watch in terror and fear, until the MVP himself rejoins the battle. Bakugo is back up from his previous fight with Shigaraki, which led to his death were it not for the quick work of the pro hero Edgeshot.
He quickly assesses the situation and, working with Deku in a split second, they combine their efforts to propel Bakugo across the city in a fraction of a second and save All Might (ripping the arms off AFO in the process, I might add!). The world is then trying to remember who this hero is, with mentions of his previous public appearances at both the Sports Festival and his kidnapping by the League of Villains. There’s even a cameo from the young kids from the second movie, in which Bakugo played a huge role.
Bakugo is not one for subtle entrances, though. After a quick breakdown of the situation with All Might and what’s left of Edgeshot, he explodes into a one on one battle, loudly proclaiming, “I’M THE FINAL BOSS. ALL FOR ONE!” This forces AFO to be hit with a string of memories of the second user, who looks a lot like Bakugo.
It’s deeply satisfying to see this horrific guy lose his cool and composure. After all, he spent years planning his takeover, taking into account every contingency, only to be hit with an endless barrage of people all inspired by All Might in one way or another. The man has lost his aura now, and Bakugo is not letting up.
Bakugo has now fully understood his quirk and, knowing that his injuries are pushing his body beyond its limits and close to death, he is not going easy. Within the blink of an eye, he catches up to AFO and flies past him through buildings, laughing like a maniac and causing AFO to get triggered even more. There is a reason Bakugo is the #1 ranked character among My Hero fans, and it’s this: he’s got a mouth on him, but he also has the fists to cash the checks his mouth is writing.
Verdict
Visually, this is one of the best the anime has ever looked. Explosive colors and smooth animation throughout made it an absolute delight to watch, and the slow-motion choices to indicate the speed at which Bakugo is traveling are awe-inspiring. All Might’s rescue comes as a great relief as well, with his inner acceptance of death and ‘passing on the baton’ to the new generation. Even seeing Bakugo crack a genuine All Might smile is just too infectious not to be affected by it.
