Synopsis
Every so often a girl’s gotta stretch her legs, leave her comfort zone, get mortally wounded, thrown into an RV, and driven across the country on an involuntary roadtrip (a.k.a. I’ve been kidnapped)! The Gunbuddies are back and they’ve taken yours truly on an action-packed jaunt to Coast City. Will we all become best budz forevah,or am I gonna crash their RV into a concrete wall? One thing’s for sure: by the end of this issue zoo animals will be running wild through the streets!
Review
Have you ever been dragged on a girls’ trip you didn’t even want to join—only for it to spiral into gunfire, a car crash, crashing a zoo, and riding a Malayan tapir? Harley Quinn gets the full first-hand experience in Harley Quinn #54, and trust me—it’s absolute chaos worth witnessing.
From the very first page, Harley is nowhere to be found—or maybe she’s hiding. Either way, the search is on. Friends like Chicken Fingers hunt for her with genuine worry, while enemies such as Althea Klang come fueled with a twisted obsession that feels halfway between hatred and reluctant affection. It’s got real “enemies to lovers” energy—messy, hilarious, and oh-so Harley.
So, where is she? Locked away in a grimy room on an even grimier bed, bickering with her own “inner Harley.” Her captors? The Gunbuddies—still a terrible name, but hilariously perfect for this cringe-fest of a duo. They’ve snatched her up and are carting her off to who-knows-where. Harley’s life? In jeopardy. Harley’s reaction to these bargain-bin baddies? Comedy gold. She drops zingers like: “Hands in the air, sickos. You messed with the wrong melanin-deficient psycho-babe” and “Outta the way, people. Run for your lives. C-list villains on the loose.” Both lines are laugh-out-loud ridiculous in the best way possible.
The comedy, as always, is the beating heart of this series. Harley’s humour is razor-sharp yet delightfully absurd, and Kalan writes it with a freshness that never feels stale. It’s a delicate balancing act—chaotic but precise—and the creative team continues to stick the landing.
And let’s not forget the Easter eggs. This issue sneaks in a Green Lantern gag so over-the-top cheesy that it had me cackling. These little nods to the wider DC Universe aren’t just fan service; they make the world feel alive, vibrant, and playful. To top it off, a mysterious character pops up briefly, causing just enough chaos to tease a much bigger storyline on the horizon. You’ll know it the second you see it.
Verdict
Overall, Harley Quinn #54 is another hilarious, chaotic ride that balances heart with absolute goofiness. The mix of quirky Easter eggs and sharp one-liners makes it a joy to read. Kalan and the creative team nail Harley’s unpredictable energy once again. A must-read for fans who love their comics wild, weird, and wonderfully unhinged.
