    Synopsis

Just when it seemed like the Tin Can Society was starting to get some answers, everything changed. Now they must face a foe more daunting than they had ever imagined, even as their relationships threaten to crumble beneath them.

    Review

Over seven gripping issues, The Tin Can Society has solidified itself as a behemoth of powerful character drama and explosive twists. Now, in its second-to-last instalment, the fate of these characters we’ve come to love is left purely down to the hands of Peter Warren and Rick Remender.

I have to start off by saying that this issue in particular highlights the powerhouse duo of Francesco Mobili and Chris Chuckry more so than any of the previous ones. Right from the start, we are hit with the strikingly beautiful imagery of a turtle’s rest being disrupted by the yacht crashing into the sea. The colours from Chuckry are rich, and Mobili’s illustrations remain just as detailed and textured as they have throughout this entire series.

This opening also hits the ground running with nonstop suspense and action, which doesn’t let up with every page. The group’s friendship and heroism are pushed to the limit as they must survive the sinking boat whilst battling the drones that continue to attack them. It’s a bombastic way to kick things off, but it effortlessly sets the bar high for the final leg of this story.

Despite all of the intense action going on, The Tin Can Society always remembers its roots within hard-hitting, character-driven emotion and drama. Even here in this chaotic issue, a gripping sequence involving Adam will really put readers’ hearts in their mouths as memories of his time on the college football team come flooding back in and parallel his current predicament.

Compared to previous issues, this one relies heavily on visuals and forward momentum and less on dialogue. At this point, the series has earned the right to go all out with its spectacle and bombast, as the violence has progressively merged to the forefront over the course of the series.

The closing moments of this issue leave the finale in an interesting place, as it ends on a simple but effective cliffhanger that sees no immediate means of escape. With the context and character building from earlier in the series doing most of the heavy lifting, the endless peril the group faces is at their peak as this instalment draws to a close.

I honestly don’t know how this series is going to conclude everything, but one thing is for certain…Warren and Remender have put everything into making this story and the characters that inhabit it as engrossing as they possibly can. Occasionally, it can feel as if things are getting a little over the top for their own good, but thanks to its core group of strong characters and its consistently enthralling narrative, The Tin Can Society never disappoints.

    Verdict

As the tensions are raised to an all-time high for the series finale, Warren and Remender use the penultimate instalment of The Tin Can Society to push the action, emotions and stakes as far as they’ve ever gone…and the result is a nailbiting page turner.
