    Synopsis

As the Tin Can Society processes their discovery during the showdown with Caliburn, they’re left with as many questions as answers. To unravel the baffling truth, they must confront Hillary Cross—movie star, ascendant leader of Moore Progress, and Johnny’s enigma of a widow.

    Review

Where does one start with an issue like this? After the rather hectic last issue, the puzzle pieces seem to be falling into place now, even if more questions were being raised along the way. Now, with this sixth issue, the doors to a lot of mysteries we’ve been wondering about will be kicked wide open.

For the past few issues, Warren and Remender have been setting up many plot threads that have taken the narrative in consistently bold and unpredictable directions. One worry that I was starting to have with the series was that it was constantly setting stuff up and not giving the readers any payoff. Thankfully, despite its shocking cold open, the issue very quickly gets to work at addressing as much as possible.

After their near-death experience in issue 5, the group heads straight to Hillary Cross for some concrete answers regarding Johnny’s death and this baby they’ve stumbled across. What follows may initially come across as an information dump, but at this point in the story, it is justified as there is a lot to wrap up.

Now that all of these elements are explained, it makes all the small details from before make a lot more sense. From Hillary’s motivations to Sharon’s scheming to Nora’s surrogacy, all of the lies and blackmail clearly show how Sharon has laid everything into place, using Johnny’s ideas and legacy against him. However, even as revelations are being unearthed and Hillary is starting appear sympathetic, she somehow still manages to get the upper hand.

The second half of this issue amps up the action and suspense in unexpected ways. The group fight for their lives against a surprise attack, and all of this is brought to life so vividly with Mobili’s once again stunning artwork and Chuckry’s luminous colouring. Mobili’s detail for character expressions and finding intensity in the smallest of moments is really highlighted in the this issue. Chuckry’s colour work on the other hand adds a needed vibrancy to the closing moments of this gripping instalment, especially in a stunning double-page spread showcasing the attack.

However, Warren and Remender can’t help themselves and end yet another issue on a shocking cliffhanger. With issues 4 and 5, this approach was starting to feel a bit repetitive and tired, but the reveal at the end of issue 6 is truly one that will alter the trajectory of the entire series. Even I couldn’t believe my eyes as I turned the page and saw the final image. Where the series will go from here, I honestly don’t know.

    Verdict

This sixth instalment is an action-packed entry full of mind-blowing revelations and jaw-dropping moments. The Tin Can Society continues to be one of the best series out there, and as the story slowly creeps towards its end, the tension only seems to be getting more and more palpable with every issue.
