Paramount Pictures has debuted a behind-the-scenes featurette for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Gladiator II. The film comes exclusively to UK cinemas on November 15, 2024.
It’s been 24 years since Gladiator the Ridley Scott epic that not only garnered multiple Academy accolades, became the standard for the genre, and put Russell Crowe on the map as the iconic Maximus Decimus Meridius, whose sacrifice has clearly echoed in eternity judging from the new trailer to the legacy sequel. The new featurette catches up with composer Harry Gregson-Williams as he discusses opening up the musical landscape of Scott’s sequel.

Lucius Verus (Paul Mescal) is a warrior condemned to the gladiatorial arena after his town of Numidia was invaded and conquered for Rome by general Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal), setting Lucius in a rage-filled quest for blood, which gains Lucius the ingratiation of Macrinus (Denzel Washington), a power broker who seeks to use this untamed desire to bring Rome to his knees, promising Lucius he can have Acacius’ head in exchange for his sacrifice and bloodshed.
Under the mighty rule of co-emperors Geta (Joseph Quinn) and Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), who seem to not be Acacius’ favourite people, maybe alluded to the film possibly offering a reluctant villain who is viewed as nothing more than an instrument of his lieges’ might.
We’re shown the colosseum has seen vast improvements since the time of Commodus: from nautical battle being made spectacle now marking its presence as well as rhinos being ridden into combat, offering viewers a glimpse of what more this period epic could have in store for audiences.
What seems clear from the trailer is Lucius’ admiration for Maximus’ sacrifice, which proved a slave could bring down the world’s most powerful empire. As per the official stills and now the trailer, we can briefly see Lucius’ quest being fulfilled as he and Acacius dance sword to sword in the sandy arena, promising an epic and personal climax to echo that of perhaps Scott’s greatest cinematic achievement.
Several decades after the sacrifice of Maximus to bring down Commodus’ empire, Lucius—the grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla—lives with his wife and child in Numidia. Roman soldiers led by general Marcus Acacius invade, forcing Lucius into slavery. Inspired by the story of Maximus, Lucius resolves to fight as a gladiator while opposing the rule of the young emperors Caracalla and Geta.
