    Synopsis

In the miniseries finale of The Whisper Queen, our heroes prepare for their final showdown against The Dark Whisper, but they soon realise the steep price they must pay for victory.

    Review

We return to the ongoing saga of The Whisper Queen: A Blacksand Tale, and in the third issue, little time is wasted as we plunge head-first into the action. An epic battle unfolds within the initial frames, capturing our attention and establishing itself as the focal point of this issue. As the battle unfolds, we’re treated to some truly incredible action, all of which is vividly captured through the unique and awe-inspiring artistic flair of Kris Anka (line art) and Matt Wilson (colour art). The most fitting way to describe the art of this series is that it possesses a distinctive point of view and perspective. It’s full of perspective and is truly inspired, which allows the artwork to elegantly stitch the narrative together, enhancing the overall experience.

I mentioned it in my review of Issue 2 of The Whisper Queen: A Blacksand Tale, and I will repeat it again; the way this series adeptly utilises flashbacks is so exciting to me as a reader. It’s 100% my personal preference, but flashback sequences in comics are a little redundant and tiring. Thankfully, that is not the case here. Javro, as a character, has navigated through a series of, for lack of a better term, questionable decisions during her tenure as an assassin.

One of the things that I really love about this series is the dialogue. As someone who is new to this world, dialogue has been vital in keeping me hooked. It helps to progress the story and provides important context, which makes it perfect for newcomers like myself to understand the character dynamics, lore, and the overall context of the world and story. As the main story progresses, Javros’ past and her decisions have peculiar and significant effects on the direction of the story. We gain further insight into Javro’s relationship with the former king as his royal assassin and what was asked of her. All of which have a direct impact on the story, resulting in high stakes and shocking revelations.

As we reach the end of the issue, we’re thrown back to the gutsy opening line that kicked off this entire journey: ‘The king is dead.’ Turning the final pages, the story comes to a close (for now?), resulting in an epic mix of emotions. It’s fair to say that this miniseries has delivered action-packed scenes and revelations, living up to all the hype it’s been getting.

    Verdict

Overall, the third issue of The Whisper Queen levels up, offering a deeper exploration of its characters and world. It’s a punchy, action-packed page-turner worthy of your time. So, whether you’ve been following the “The White Trees: A Blacksand Tale” story for a while, or this is your starting point, this series is an excellent read full of mystery, lore and action.
