Synopsis
The sun set on samurai and gunslingers at roughly the same time, but our two leads didn’t die off quietly. In the East, Asami, an Onna-musha warrior and female samurai, would rather die with her weapons than surrender them to a sword hunt. In the West, the gunslinger MacRaith follows his revenge to the bitter end and pays the ultimate price.
The future lovers are mortally wounded a world apart and awake together in a purgatory ruled by a ruthless society of damned warriors. This one has it all—action, the dead, the dying, the undead, and of course…romance.
Review
Falling in Love on the Path to Hell is an exciting new comic series that offers a perfect blend of action, mystery, romance, and world-building. Written by Gerry Duggan and art by Garry Brown, this gripping tale follows two contrasting characters who find themselves transported to a purgatory ruled by a ruthless society of damned warriors. This weird twist of events sets the story in motion as the unlikely duo begins to navigate this world full of blood, revenge, and honour.
The inaugural issue of ‘Falling in Love on the Path to Hell’ provides a captivating introduction, giving readers a glimpse into the complex lives of its protagonists, Macraith and Ogata. The story begins with a vividly drawn scene in the West, quickly setting the stage for Macraith’s bloody and brilliant entrance. Macraith is characterised by a mix of violence, wit and cunning, firmly establishing him as the quintessential bounty hunter. His unique moral compass and relentless pursuit of his goals are on full display within the first couple of frames, and it defines him perfectly.
Shortly after Mcraith’s introduction, the story shifts location to the East, where we meet Ogata Asami. Opting to carve out her own destiny, her transformation from a rebel to a formidable warrior is sparked by the injustices suffered by the samurais during the Satsuma Rebellion at the hands of the imperial Meiji Japanese government. Ogata shatters the expectations associated with her heritage from a prestigious samurai family, and her defiance against societal norms and the burning desire to rekindle the rebellion’s dwindling flames make her introduction unforgettable.
Duggan weaves the destinies of the gunslinger and the formidable samurai together beautifully, skillfully laying the groundwork for a saga filled with encounters against both human and monstrous adversaries. The inaugural issue expertly captures the unique cultures of the American Midwest and traditional Japan, both in visuals and themes. The contrasting introductions of Macraith and Ogata highlight their individual prowess and hint at an inevitable merging of their journeys and a collision of beliefs and morals. This approach in storytelling deftly draws parallels between the characters, setting up a narrative rich in intertwined fates.
From the beginning, this epic tale promises a deep dive into its vibrant world and intricate characters, and so far, it manages to live up to the hype.
