Review
As My Adventures with Superman returns with the third episode of its second season it’s clear that Josie Campbell and the writing team are keen to layer the series with plenty of Super-lore from the comics. As the title of this episode suggests the series is adding one (or more) characters to the mix who long-time Superman fans will be more than familiar with.
What’s interesting about this second season is the sense of urgency is building out the wider world. In no way do I think there are forces pushing the show to encompass more of the DCU. But those connections to other cities or other heroes feel more prominent this season. That feels most obvious in this episode with the inclusion of Vicki Vale. Now hear me out. Vicki absolutely appears here to dig deeper in to Lois’ hero worship. Pitting the two against each other gives Lois a chance to show mettle. There’s no denying that. But including a character like Vicki naturally leads to speculation about a certain Dark Knight’s existence and potential inclusion in future storytelling.
Bringing the focus back to the core cast, it’s really interesting to see how each of them is being built up this season. With friendships cemented My Adventures is able to spend less time focussing on the getting to know you part of the relationship and move on to more complex storytelling around their growth both singularly and as a group. It certainly feels different to the approach in season 1, particularly around the romantic subplot between Clark and Lois.
What feels particularly special is the effortless way in which the story of Clark’s journey to becoming the Man of Steel is built in to the show. Every step he takes towards embracing his legacy is a joy to behold. But what I’m finding extra enticing is the little changes made to his powers and what this might mean for the future. Keep a close eye on a couple of moments in this episode when it seems like new powers might be being introduced…
Elsewhere “Fullmetal Scientist” is introducing a couple of other characters to the series. Neither of which am I going to name here. One of them had breadcrumbs laid in last week’s two-episode premiere and won’t come as a surprise. The other I hadn’t anticipated seeing but love the approach the My Adventures team has taken to including the character. To side step spoilers, it’s fascinating to see how subtle changes to characters from the comics plays perfectly in to the way this world has been constructed.
Verdict
Another brilliant episode from Team My Adventures with Superman. My concerns about the number of new characters being introduced have been totally allayed by the care and attention taken to writing them in to the series’ ongoing storylines.
