And more importantly…are any of them worthy enough to claim the power of the throne? This anniversary issue will give answers to ALL those long-gestating questions, and the aftermath of which will continue into the four current titles (SPAWN, GUNSLINGER SPAWN, SCORCHED, and KING SPAWN).
Review
In this record breaking issue we see the end of the race for Hell’s Throne as the new ruler of hell is finally revealed, but it isn’t who we all thought it would be. Sin is at his most powerful and he believes that he is at the final point of his journey and he is the only one left in the race, how further from the truth he could be he will soon find out who is lurking within the dark shadows of the Keep.
Clown is lurking and still has a plan to put in place but at this point he isn’t really seen as a real threat to the throne, the main threat for Sin is Spawn and the two finally come face to face in an epic finale battle at the steps of Hell’s Throne with the arrogant Sin still believing he has the upper hand with his new found power taking over and giving him the increased personal belief in his power but Spawn is not a character that is likely to walk away from any confrontation especially not this one.
Unbeknownst to Sin, Spawn has a weapon he forged in Heaven that could finally take out Sin once and for all but time is running out and it’s certainly a risk to be trying out new weapons at this point, but some risks are definitely worth taking.
A voice in Spawns head shows a conversation with Spawn and Wanda as she attempts to convince Spawn not to take the throne, Spawn agrees and puts the suggestion to Wanda that she should take the throne instead however Wanda cannot take the throne as she is not of Hell’s origin and only those who are marked by hell can take it, a person emerges from the shadows to step forward and claim the throne, who could it be? and what would that mean for Earth realm and the rest of the multiverse?
For an issue as important as this one you just had to have Todd McFarlane involved with the writing, he combines with Rory McConville to finally reveal the epic finale of this landmark event within the Spawn multiverse. The journey for Hell’s Throne has been one of if not the best series I have read in comics, the story has been unrelenting throughout and the writing has been breathtaking I have literally read each comic on the edge of my seat, this will definitely blow you away.
The artwork has been stepped up a notch from the usual high quality imagery of Spawn comics, I normally enjoy the artwork but the art in this book is incredible the fight scenes between Sin and Spawn are mind blowing, so much detail and furious warfare some of the best I’ve seen without doubt.
Although I am sad this journey has come to an end I am excited to see the path it will now take.
Verdict
Incredible on every page. The finale this series is worthy of, some of the best work from the Image creative team. Spawn has always been one of my favourite comic books and this series has further cemented it’s place as my favourite, creative writing at it’s very best. If this doesn’t get turned into a film or a series then it will be a crime it definitely deserves screen time.
