The trailer for the highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine caused quite a stir, didn’t it? Not only did it break a record previously held by Spidey’s No Way Home, but it also got a lot of people talking and hunting. It feels like it has been a while since we’ve had a good trailer to study and scrutinize, and this first look is full of nods, teases, and easter eggs. So, let’s take a look at some of the biggest reveals spotted in the trailer.
Colossus is back.
Stefan Kapičić is back as Colossus. The X-Man is seen attending Wade’s birthday party before the Merc with the mouth is dragged away by the TVA. It’s hard to guess just how involved Colossus will be in this third installment, but since Wolverine is back… Wouldn’t it be great to see Colossus throw Logan?
The TVA show Wade some key moments from the MCU.
The TVA are back with new uniforms and a new mission, and for whatever reason… Deadpool is the key. At this point, it’s safe to assume that Deadpool has no idea about the MCU, so the TVA enlighten him by showing him key moments. Clips from The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron, and Ragnarok can be seen on the TVA screens. It appears as though Wade will fight to keep the Foxverse alive, preventing it from being consumed by the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
First look at Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova?
Our favourite game. Guess the bald character. The immediate response is usually Professor X, but we don’t think it’s him – although, he could still definitely appear. We’re under the impression that this is our first look at the villainous Cassandra Nova, who actually has an interesting and dark connection to Charles Xavier.
Simply put, Nova is Charles’ evil twin. Nova is what’s called a mummundrai, a bodiless entity that is hungry for a physical form. In the womb of Sharon Xavier, Charles’ mother, Nova created a body for herself which was actually delivered stillborn after Xavier fought her off in the womb. Like Voldemort, her spirit endured until she eventually fashioned a new body using Charles’ DNA, ultimately gifting her with his unique abilites.
If they go down this route, then we may actually see a version of Charles. What her role is in this third installment is currently a mystery.
Wolverine in a white suit! Is it our Wolverine, though?
We get two good glimpses of Wolverine, and one of them shows the cigar-smoking killing machine donning a dashing white suit. We know it’s Logan because of the distinct hairstyle. However, we’re calling it a red herring. Ever since Wolverine was announced, there have been rumors concerning varients. With the TVA involved, the prospect of different versions of Wolverine appearing seems quite likely. As Loki proved, Varients don’t have to look the same either.
Could this be a different Wolverine (please have an eyepatch)? Perhaps a Wolverine played by Daniel Radcliffe or Tarron Edgerton? We’ll have to wait and see.
Deadpool’s battle involves a Planet of the Apes-esque backdrop
The iconic logo for 20th century Fox appears in the trailer, hinting at the demise of the Foxverse. In a way, it kind of reminded us of that famous scene from Planet of the Apes with the Statue of Liberty poking out of the ground. Set photos also revealed that this location will be where Deadpool and Wolverine lock claws and swords.
Aaron Stanford is back as Pyro
Aaron Stanford played one of the X-men’s hottest characters, literally. Pyro (John Allerdyce) first appeared in X2, and then in X-Men: The Last Stand, the human flamethrower turns to the darkside and joins Magneto in his quest to bring the Mutants out from the shadows. While it is another brilliant tie-in to the Foxverse, we don’t really know what he’ll be doing. Is it a brief cameo? Or is it something more?
A potential Secret Wars and Doctor Doom tease?
We have no idea who spotted this and how, but congratulations. Right at the end of the trailer when Deadpool is on the floor, there is a very faint and damaged copy of a comic book lying near him. Specificially, it’s the 5th issue of the 2015 Secret Wars run which actually featured God Emperor Doom, a powered up version of the iconic Fantastic Four villain. Now, with Marvel Studios officially bringing Secret Wars to the big screen, a tease isn’t out of the ordinary. However, the fact that this cover includes Doctor Doom adds an extra layer of mystery. Is this teasing Doom’s arrival, or is this just a ploy to get fans speculating?
Helicarriers inbound
In the wasteland that features the decrepit 20th Century Fox logo, a very odd looking satellite dish unfolds. But that’s not what we’re focusing on here. To the far left, you can actually see a huge propeller… A propeller that seems to belong to one of SHIELDs’ Helicarriers. Why is it there? Well, that’s a mystery. There are a lot of unanswered questions, but we could surmise that the MCU and FoxVerse are somehow clashing in this desert wasteland. Similar to how the multiverse clashes in Into The Spider-Verse, this landscape could be the convergence point.
The return of Alioth
I only spotted this one on my 4th rewatch. It is very much a “blink, and you’ll miss it moment”. A TVA soldier is quickly swooped off of the ground, but it is very hard to make out what grabs him. The only clue is the faint presence of a purple fog, which should automatically raise alarm bells. Let’s go back to Loki season one. In the Void, Loki stumbles across other varients, as well as a cataclysmic entity known as Alioth. Alioth’s presense may actually explain quite a lot of the oddities in thsi trailer…
According to Loki, when things are “pruned”, they aren’t destroyed, they are displaced and left in a realm that exists outside of time- The Void. Pyro, Wolverine, the Helicarrier, even the Fox logo, they could have all been casualties of pruning, the MCU’s attempt to erase the Fox timeline. Alioth is the guardian of the Void, so when things heat up… Alioth is there to keep things in order
