Synopsis
Blade Runner-style action mixes with big emotions as stray dog Scrapper and his buddy Tank fight for justice against the totalitarian forces of a post-apocalyptic domed city. But when the fight comes to his home Scrapper will face losing what’s most important to him-and gain a terrifying truth in the process. (Don’t worry Mom. The dog doesn’t die.)
Review
In this introductory issue of the latest series from Image Comics, we are transported to a post – apocalyptic city, New Verona, where society is ruled with a iron fist by the corporate entity Smite. Two spirited stray dogs Scrapper and Tank look to clear the streets of wrong doers and keeping the rat population at bay. The crime fighting canine duo come across a mysterious warehouse and Scrapper is determined to check it out and find out what is going on inside those walls, but he will need to tread carefully as Smite is always watching.
There seems to be a hidden truth regarding our plucky hero, but what is it? As events unfold we see an emotional attachment to a human couple that could indeed hold the key to the answer but events may put a full stop on that path pretty quickly.
Being a big fan of the huge Xbox franchise Gears of War, as soon as I saw that Cliff Bleszinski was involved in this new project I just knew that I needed to check it out and I wasn’t disappointed, with the help of Alex De Campi Cliff easily proves that games aren’t the only thing he can create to an extremely hight level, the story of Scrapper seems to be one that is full of emotion and intrigue, the foundations have been set for a series that looks to be one that will be high on my list of favourites this year.
Sandy Jarrell supplies the illustrations for the book which gives the story that gritty edge and allows the reader to visually step deep into the world of New Verona and feel the dystopian landscape, there is murder and intrigue on these streets and Scrapper is the dog to find the answers.
Verdict
A great introduction to a new series, a series that has the potential to grow into one of the best. With gaming legend Cliff Bleszinski driving the creativity I am positive the series is in great hands and I can’t wait to see what is to come.
