Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #109 is published by BOOM! Studios, written by Melissa Flores and illustrated by Marco Renna.

Issue #109 is available 21st June 2023 either directly from BOOM! Studios online or from your local comic book store, digital copies will be available to download from the usual content providers.

    Synopsis

As fans eagerly await the epic 30th anniversary of the airing of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the horrifying truth of the Vessel finally revealed to Zordon and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but the last person they want to fight shatters their odds of success.

But it’s not only heroes that clash with each other-villains too, in a brutal battle that will pit former allies against each other and ultimately unearth long-buried secrets that readers have been dying to know!

    Review

In this issue the story arc continues as we see the different veins of the story intensify. Drakkon has awoken Kiya from her frozen state but to say she isn’t best pleased to see Drakkon would be an understatement, Drakkon has a plan he needs Kiya onside to make his plan work go back to his realm and overrule the land, it’s as easy as that – or is it? what lies in wait on the other side of the arch and more importantly is it what Drakkon thinks it will be like?Alongside this story vein we follow Rita Repulsa as she continues her assault on the Rangers HQ but meets with an unlikely resistance in Lord Zedd who has now taken his Ranger form and is at his most powerful but Rita has always been powerful and the pair stand in the way of each other, the only way past is through the other there will be no pushing to one side in the most epic of villain battles. The Rangers themselves have an epic battle of their own to deal with as not only are the up against enhanced putties the manipulated evil Green Ranger appears to carry out the evil orders from his evil mistress to take out the Rangers, but can they save Matt from the evil that Repulsa has inflicted on him, this is definitely a personal fight.

I like what Melissa Flores has done with this issue, creating an emotionally charged chapter taking the reader towards the anniversary event, at first I was slightly concerned at how the book seems to jump between the different veins of story but it worked well in telling a wider story that has a deeper effect on the Ranger universe as a whole, intense writing from the start a full on page turner that is building the tension perfectly for what is on the horizon.

Marco Renna provides the artwork that brings the intense story to life perfectly, my favourite art was definitely the battle between Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd explosive action that felt like it was going to explode off the screen (I read it in digital format). Really the book didn’t need words as the artwork could easily tell the story, it had emotion and passion bursting from every panel.

    Verdict

The intensity of this book had me gripped from the beginning to end, this series is fast becoming THE series not to be missed in comics. The writing and artwork are on another level and stand head and shoulders above the rest.
