AVATAR Sequels Delayed As Disney Shifts Upcoming Slate

We’ve known for a while that the next several Avatar sequels have been in production, with the third film nearing completion. However, that hasn’t stopped Disney from pushing each sequel back as part of their massive schedule reshuffle. And just to warn you… It’ll be a long wait.

Originally, Avatar 3 was scheduled to hit the big screen on December 20th, 2024- the same day as Paramount’s Sonic 3. It will now arrive on December 19th, 2025. Avatar 4 has been delayed by 3 full years going from December 2026 to December 21st, 2029. Avatar 5, the film that is meant to wrap up Cameron’s sci-fi epic, will arrive on December 19th, 2031. Based on that timeline, the final Avatar movie will air 22 years after the first film… Isn’t that crazy?

    So, let’s recap.

    19th December, 2025- Avatar 3
    21st December, 2029- Avatar 4
    19th December, 2031- Avatar 5

While these new dates seem incredibly far away, and let’s face it… they are, this extension will allow the post-production and visual-effects department to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible. With such an innovative team working behind the scenes with new technologies and developments, the sequels could usher in an entirely different cinema experience. Only time will tell.

Producer Jon Landau shared the news via Twitter with a very small tease of what’s to come. The still seems to include Jake Sully and his son Lo’ak, who is donning a different style of war paint.

Each Avatar film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect. The team is hard at work and can’t wait to bring audiences back to Pandora in December 2025. pic.twitter.com/DrFX01qzTa

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is available to watch on Disney+ now. The DVD, Blu-ray & UHD will be released on June 26th.
