Sony Pictures have released the first trailer for Neil Blomkamp’s adaptation of the popular PlayStation racing franchise Gran Turismo. Taking a small break from his usual sci-fi endeavors, such as District 9 and Elysium, Blomkamp is tackling the remarkable true story of Jann Mardeborough, a young teenager who went from video game enthusiast to professional racer.
Archie Madekwe is playing Mardeborough, with Stranger Things‘ David Harbour as Mardeborough’s trainer Jack Salter. Djimon Hounsou will play Mardenborough’s father, Orlando Bloom will be playing Danny Moore the motorsport marketing executive, and Darren Barnet will play Matty Davis a top GT Academy driver threatened by Jann’s success.
Based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough, the film is the ultimate wish fulfillment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional racecar driver.
Gran Turismo first launched in 1997 by developer Polyphony Digital and is PlayStation’s highest-selling franchise with more than 80 million units sold since its debut. With 14 games under its belt, Gran Turismo is the go-to game for that realistic and adrenaline inducing experience of being sat behind the wheel.
The thrilling true story will speed onto the big screen on August 11th, 2023. Will you be checking out this high-octane true story? Let us know in the comments.
