Wonderful news for DC Comics fans as one of the biggest names in comics, Jim Lee, is named President of the publisher. In making the announcement it has been confirmed that Lee is securing his future at the company he has called home for over two decades.
Lee will continue to report to Pam Lifford, president of global brands, franchises and experiences at Warner Bros. Discovery, who announced the promotion Wednesday. He will also continue in his primary role as publisher at DC, where he leads the creative teams. He will also continue to lead the creative efforts to integrate DC’s publishing portfolio of characters and stories across all media, supporting the brands and studios of Warner Bros. Discovery.
His career in comics began back in 1987 when he began took on illustrating Alpha Flight, The Punisher War Journal for Marvel. It was his run on Uncanny X-Men which saw Lee capturing the public consciousness. Later, he would co-write issues of X-Men alongside another legend of the industry, Chris Claremont. Around a year later, Lee would leave Marvel and form Image Comics alongside Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Todd McFarlane, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino. It was there that he formed the Wildstorm Productions imprint and began publishing titles such as WildC.A.T.s and Stormwatch.
Lee first joined DC in 1998 and quickly began to rise through the ranks. In 2010 he was named Co-Publisher alongside Dan DiDio and the pair would oversee a number of re-launches across the line including the hugely successful DC Rebirth era. Lee replaced Geoff Johns as DC’s Chief Creative Officer in 2018 and, in 2020, he became the sole publisher after DiDio departed from the company.
Despite his busy schedule, Lee still regularly draws covers for DC books and is a fan-favourite at comic cons with his panels and signings. Congratulations Jim!
