It seems like it was a while ago since we first mentioned Warner Bros. and Amblin’s upcoming HBO Max animated series, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. The wonderful Ming-Na Wen joined just over a year ago, and we got our first look at the animated Gizmo roughly two months ago. However, today brought us an incredibly exciting first look. Get ready to meet the Wing family who are the heart and soul of Secrets of the Mogwai. We’ll learn more about Gizmo and his species through them. They’ll guide us through the ancient mythology, as well as the rules behind the Mogwai.
The series is set to premiere later this year, so to get you prepared for this vibrant prequel here is an official look at the Wing family.
Meet the Wing family:
James Hong as Grandpa
A free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myth and magic, Grandpa is the elder of the Wing family. He claims to have traveled the world on grand adventures, but nobody really believed him… until now. He alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them.
Ming-Na Wen as Fong Wing
Sam’s protective mother and is a doctor of Chinese medicine. She’s resourceful, slyly funny, and fiercely protective of her family. You definitely don’t want to mess with Fong.
BD Wong as Hon Wing
He has never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure. But when he and Fong become separated from Sam, he realizes the world is stranger than he thought, and that he’ll need to become braver to reunite his family.
Izaac Wang as Sam Wing
Sam Wing is a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeep and Gizmo’s guardian in the original Gremlins films. Young Sam lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine shop. Sheltered and cautious, Sam will be thrown into the adventure of a lifetime when he promises his Grandpa he’ll get Gizmo home.
Warner Bros. Animation has confirmed that the first episode of the series will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Festival which kicks off in June 2022. HBO Max has yet to set an official premiere date for the series.
The series will act as a prequel to the original 1984 Gremlins film. Alongside Gizmo the show will feature Sam Wing, a ten-year-old who will grow up to become Gizomo’s elderly owner in the first movie. Gizmo and Sam first meet in 1920 on the streets of Shanghai. Together, they embark on a journey through China to reunite Gizmo with his family and possibly to find a lost treasure as well. However, they will find themselves opposed by a wealthy industrialist and his personal army of Gremlins.
Original Gremlins director Joe Dante serves as a consulting producer on the show, which is executive produced by Tze Chun and Brendan Hay.
