It’s hard to believe but we’re almost three years on from the first announcement of Gremlins prequel series, Secrets of the Mogwai. But with the series premiere now fast approaching, Warner Bros. and HBO Max has given fans a glimpse at the animated series with a first look image.
The image (below) shows off a younger version of Gremlins main man, Gizmo, in what appears to be a Shanghai location. Though it may only be still image, this first look gives us a much better idea of what to expect from the series’ visual style.
Warner Bros. Animation has confirmed that the first episode of the series will premiere at the Annecy International Animation Festival which kicks off in June 2022. HBO Max has yet to set an official premiere date for the series.
The series will act as a prequel to the original 1984 Gremlins film. Alongside Gizmo the show will feature Sam Wing, a ten-year-old who will grow up to become Gizomo’s elderly owner in the first movie. Gizmo and Sam first meet in 1920 on the streets of Shanghai. Together, they embark on a journey through China to reunite Gizmo with his family and possibly to find a lost treasure as well. However, they will find themselves opposed by a wealthy industrialist and his personal army of Gremlins.
Izaac Wang will star in the series as Sam Wing, with Ming-Na Wen as Fong Wing, B. D. Wong as Hon Wing, James Hong as Grandpa Wing, Matthew Rhys as Riley Greene, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green as Elle, and A. J. Locascio as Gizmo,.
Original Gremlins director Joe Dante serves as a consulting producer on the show, which is executive produced by Tze Chun and Brendan Hay.
