Those Disney+ Day reveals just keep on coming… to on the heels of X-Men and Marvel Zombies animated series, it’s now the turn of Peter Parker to return to the small screen.
The studios has announced that the MCU’s version of Spider-Man will be the focus of a new animated series, Spider-Man: Freshman Year. The series, which does not have any confirmed casting at the time of writing, will follow the version of Parker played by Tom Holland on his journey to becoming the legendary comic book hero.
Executive produced by Jeff Trammel, the series is expected to follow Parker during his freshman year in high school. Fans will recall that in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Parker was a sophomore.
Spider-Man has easily been Marvel’s most successful character on the small screen, appearing in a number of animated series over the years. His animated history begins in 1967 with the series that brought one of the most infamous theme tunes to our ears. Spidey returned for more animated adventures in 1981 with Spider-Man and Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. Jumping to 1994 fans were then treated to Spider-Man: The Animated Series, possibly the most successful of all his animated adventures. That show bore a spin-off, Spider-Man Unlimited in 1999.
MTV dipped their toe in to animated superheroes in 2003 with Spider-Man: The New Animated Series, a 3D animated show which lasted for just one season. In 2008 The Spectacular Spider-Man brought the wall crawler to a younger audience with a more kid-friendly animated show. In 2012 Spectacular was replaced by Ultimate Spider-Man and lasting for over 100 episodes.
A new series, simply entitled Spider-Man began airing in 2017 on Disney XD and running for three seasons. Most recently the Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends title was resurrected for a new show on Disney Junior. Once again aimed at a younger audience the series pairs Spidey with Miles Morales and Gwen Stacey as a trio of new heroes. A second season is currently in production.
