Earlier in the summer, in his theatrical review of the film, Matt called Space Jam: A New Legacy “a slam dunk for televisions greatest and looniest of tunes.” He praised the film for its layers and layer of Easter eggs, particularly in the crowd at the big match. He also praised Eric Bauza, the newest voice actor to join the world of Looney Tunes and who he said “flawlessly captured the voices of these beloved characters.”
Now that Space Jam: A New Legacy is available on home video in the UK we’re taking a look at the bonus features on this awesome, family adventure release.
First up though, the technical specs. The film and bonus features come locked in on a single BD-50 disc. The film maintains its 1:85:1 aspect ration from the theatrical release and is, of course, presented in full 1080p. Whilst not as powerful as its 4K counterpart, the Blu-ray release of the film is still a near-perfect translation from the big screen.
Some compression artefacts and minor banding issues do arise during playback. But given this is a film aimed at a younger audience it’s unlikely the little ones will complain. Especially when the film’s brilliant colour palette leaps off the screen in HD. The cartoon world of the Looney Tunes looks excellent and mixed media scenes (such as the basketball match) play well on a home device.
Space Jam: A New Legacy comes back with a Dolby Atmos audio track which more than capably handles the film’s audio landscape. On the right sound system the Atmos track easily fills the room, replicating the busy nature of the film perfectly. The film is very front loaded when it comes to audio but once again, it’s perfect for the little ones.
The film comes loaded with a number of bonus features, the first dives behind the scenes with four perfectly produced featurettes. Each features snippets of interview with key members of the film’s production including director Malcolm D. Lee, producer Ryan Coogler, VFX supervisor Grady Coffer, makeup department head Howard Berger, producer Maverick Carter and music supervisor Kier Lehman. Also appearing are cast members LeBron James, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Anthony Davis. There’s plenty of behind the scenes footage for film fans to enjoy.
Next up are a number of deleted scenes, five in total. Not all are complete with some featuring incomplete special effects or scenes presented as storyboards. None is key to the film’s overall storyline but they do give a glimpse at some interesting moments lost from the big screen experience.
Overall, Space Jam: A New Legacy lands on home video with the perfect package to keep the kids happy on a dreary winter weekend. Colourful, action-packed and well translated from the big screen to your home screen.
