    Synopsis

A powerful new series for fans of The Wicked + The Divine and The Dreaming from Ram V (Justice League Dark) and Filipe Andrade (Captain Marvel) that explores the fine line between living and dying in Mumbai through the lens of magical realism. With humanity on the verge of discovering immortality, the avatar of Death is fired and relegated to the world below to live out her now-finite days in the body of twenty-something Laila Starr in Mumbai.

Struggling with her new-found mortality, Laila has found a way to be placed in the time and place where the creator of immortality will be born…But will Laila take her chance to permanently reverse the course of (future) history…or does a more shocking fate await her?

    Review

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if the gods of life and death were controlled by a corporate engine? Well thanks to the superb writing of Ram V we can find out in this new magical story of Laila Starr.

Ram V sets the scene giving us an insight into the struggles of Death, who thanks to the visuals of Filipe Andrade we are able to see has been depicted as a middle aged fashionista struggling to make her way through corporate life as a failing god. The only option for Death now is to be banished to a mortal life on Earth, this is where the real story begins.

The story itself seems to follow different paths that eventually interlock and add more depth and background to the overall story, jumping from a lady giving birth to a young trendy office party then back to Death, but once you get deeper into the book you then realise that these stories all make sense and are actually laying the foundations for the overall story, with the book being left on a but if a cliffhanger it will leave the reader longing for the next installment

Thanks to the incredible artistic talents of Filipe Andrade using incredible detail and vibrant colours you are able to fully immerse your imagination into the alternative world of Ram V.

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is a story of rejection, anguish and revenge that will keep you hooked right through.

    Verdict

A familiar story told in a completely different way, mixing legends with modern life, expertly written and illustrated, bring on the next installment.

    8/10
