Yes, you read this correctly Star Wars fans. According to various sources, Josh D’Amaro, the Disney Parks Chairman, revealed a realistic and fully operational lightsaber. This lightsaber apparently comes equipped with a retractable blade. The lightsaber was shown to the press but no images or videos have been released to the public.
However, people who were lucky enough to see it, such as Spectrum News 13, have affirmed that “the way the light activated from the hilt was similar to how lightsabers activate in the Star Wars films.” Josh D’Amaro also confirmed that “it’s real” before igniting the lightsaber in front of the crowd attending the virtual presentation.
For health and safety purposes, we feel inclined to tell you that this lightsaber won’t be able to cut through doors and hands… probably.
The Portfolio Creative Executive and Studio Leader for Walt Disney Imagineering Scott Trowbridge also shared the news on Twitter saying: “A lot of questions today about whether the lightsaber that Josh D’Amaro revealed today was real or CGI, and, whether I’d share photos or video. Yes it was/is really real, and….. not yet.”

No other details have been revealed so it’s hard to predict what it will be used for. It could be part of the park itself specifically for the Jedi/Sith actors, or it could be something that may find its way to Savvi’s Workshop or Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
Another important question to ask is who’s lightsaber is it? Have they created a lightsaber for an established character, or is it a newly designed saber? We’ll have to wait and see.
Considering that this lightsaber is merely a prototype currently, it might be a while before we receive an official look. Regardless, we can’t wait to see what it actually is and how it works. Is it too good to be true? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
